THE CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC Presents

The Summer 2011 Film & Music Seminar

"A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what's behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.” Stanley Kubrick

SESSION I- “BEGINNINGS AND MORE”

Just as in opera, the overture in film has dual functions: to invite the viewer/listener into a fantasy world and introduce some of the main themes. This session will cover a variety of film overtures from different genres: comedy, adventure, suspense, historical, Western, and inspirational. Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), Oceans 11 (1960), Silverado (1985), When a Stranger Calls Back (1993), and JFK (1992) are just a few. Film composers represented are John Williams, Dana Kaproff, Nelson Riddle, Hugo Friedhofer, Vangelis, Bruce Broughton, James Newton Howard, and Max Steiner.

SESSION II- “DISTINCTIONS: LOVE, ADVENTURE, AND FRIENDSHIP”

In the Line of Fire (1993) and Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont (2005) are extraordinarily different films. One is a thriller and the other explores a profound friendship in unique circumstances. Yet both films are concerned with intimacy. It is here where the music shines. Ennio Morricone (In the Line of Fire) and Stephen Burton (Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont) create a beautiful sound world surrounding both film narratives. As an added charm, Rosemary Clooney’s voice graces Mrs. Palfrey…
